Chocolate Syrup

I posted a short Insta post yesterday with this caption:

Let me tell you a story. Something that happens almost everyday at my house.

My 8-year-old sits down to do math and starts getting upset and overwhelmed. No matter how much she has eaten for breakfast, how much she has slept, or if she has had enough outside time first. She starts crying and freaking out that she can’t do the problems (even though she is quite good at math). It’s exhausting for me and her. And it’s impossible for her to learn anything in that state.

The solution: Chocolate Milk 🍫 🥛

A simple cup made with real-food sugar (coconut, sucanat, maple syrup), real cocoa, a pinch of mineral-rich salt, and whole raw milk has been a game changer. Here’s why:

🍯 Real-food sugar provides a gentler rise in blood sugar and naturally occurring minerals that help keep her energy and mood steady.
🍫 Real cocoa powder is full of antioxidants and magnesium — both support healthy brain function, focus, and calm.
🧂 Mineral sea salt adds electrolytes that help with hydration and the nervous system (a tiny pinch makes a big difference).
🥛 Whole milk brings the healthy fats kids’ brains need for learning, development, and absorbing all those nutrients.

It feels like a treat to her…
but I know it’s actually grounding her, feeding her brain, and giving her a soft landing so she can regroup and try again.

Sometimes the answer really is as simple — and cozy — as a glass of chocolate milk.

Should I post a recipe?

The comments asking for the recipe went crazy. Well, I am not interested in gatekeeping, especially when it comes to helping kids be healthy. So I am happy, happy, happy (we’ve been watching a lot of Duck Dynasty recently) to share this simple chocolate syrup recipe.

If you’re looking for a recipe for chocolate milk made without syrup, you can find that here. This recipe is made in a blender and uses many of the same ingredients as the syrup.

Chocolate Syrup

Author:

Mineral-Rich, super easy and fast, chocolate syrup for chocolate milk. This recipe is so simple. It only takes a couple of minutes to cook up. Then just store it in a jar in the fridge for easy chocolate milk.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sweetener (coconut sugar, sucanat, maple sugar, maple syrup)
  • 2 cups cocoa powder
  • 2 cups water
  • a pinch or two of mineral-rich salt
  • a splash or two vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Stir together sugar, cocoa powder, and water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar and cocoa powder are dissolved and melted. Do not cook too long or too high; you do not want this to burn.
  2. Remove from the heat and stir in the salt and vanilla. Transfer to a jar and store in the fridge.
  3. To make chocolate milk: add about 1/4 cup of syrup to about 1 1/2 cups of milk, adjust the ratios to your liking, and stir well.
